Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/DI School

Question
Our son was sent to DI school which he knew he would have great difficulty with all the memorization. Even though he preferred a different career path, he was told DI school is required to continue being promoted. (Of course if he had refused orders, he would loose rank and would not be able to re-enlist.) But now he is being told if he can't complete this course and has to return to his unit, he will be demoted anyway. He has worked diligently to advance to his current rank and is not a slacker. Is this according to policy or just a threat/attempted motivation? I shudder to think this is the reward he gets for following orders. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you.

Answer
RH:

Normally yes, you'd go back to your command, but first I've heard about losing rank.  Then again, I'm only familiar with the Marine Corps, if this is a different branch, well, it wouldn't surprise me.   The only thing I can/could think of, of losing a stripe, would be if he was promoted contingent on completing DI school.  Then, it would make sense, since he didn't complete what was required.  Otherwise it sounds 'off' to me.  Not being able to reenlist, again, yes, I can see it, but losing rank?  I don't buy it (again it wouldn't surprise me but it sounds off).

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
