Question
My daughter is looking to enlist in the Marines this summer, she is hearing impaired in her left ear and wears a hearing aid BUT can still hear without it. Her levels are 500 - 50, 1000 - 50 and 2000 - 35, what do you suppose her chances are of passing the test? The recruiter just tells us they won't know until she actually takes the test but we are wondering if they are just going to shut her out because of the decibel levels. Please advise. Thanks Tina and Dy'Lana.

Answer
Tina,
Following is a direct quote from the military medical regulations:

Acceptable audiometric hearing levels (both ears) are:

(1) Pure tone at 500, 1000, and 2000 cycles per second of not more than 30 decibels (dB) on the average (each ear), with no individual level greater than 35dB at these frequencies.

(2) Pure tone level not more than 45 dB at 3000 cycles per second each ear, and 55 dB at 4000 cycles per second each ear.

So if she can meet these levels she can get in.
