Question
Hello Mr. Fiorentine,

my name is Nicholas, and I want to know more about the waiver for entering the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and what specific documents or regulations, as you may say, would keep people like me, or Dawn's Daughter, or anyone else who may be suffering with a similar problem, from joining the U.S. Military, and, how can we as the citizens of this nation, make a change to this and allow one to defend the right to liberty, freedom, and Justice for all?

I look forward to hearing from you, and i hope i haven't offended anyone in the armed forces by starting a petition.

I sincerely apologize for my constitutional beliefs, and I hope to one day serve in the Coast Guard, too.

Answer
Nicholas,

I assume by Concerta disqualification you are referring to someone with ADHD who is taking Concerta.  The best information that I have been able to find on ADHD and military service is available at http://www.help4adhd.org/en/living/workplace/military.

Additionally the Coast Guard Academy lists common medical disqualifications.

Psychiatric and Personality Disorders: Psychotic episodes. Character and behavior disorders. History of depression requiring meds, outpatient treatment or hospitalization. Bedwetting/sleepwalking/eating disorders past the age of 12. Attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder or learning disability such as dyslexia, which interferes with perceptual or academic skills past the age of 12. Use of medications to reduce symptoms of ADD or ADHD within the previous 12 months. (http://www.uscga.edu/display.aspx?id=2932)
