Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Unknown Military Service

I hope you can help with this, but I'm trying to piece together the military history of a fictional TV character, namely "Skipper" Jonas Grumby from "Gilligan's Island." Through the series, several clues were mentioned about his career, but the only constant was that he once served in the Navy.

Other clues mention he was a former captain in the U.S. Navy during World War Two, he mentions he was the best poker player in the 7th Fleet, being in the 177th Infantry and being a cook on an aircraft carrier. He had three ships shot out from under him during World War Two. Is it likely that one Navy Captain would have a career that accounts for all this?

If he was an officer, he was a Commander, an 0-5.  You can be a captain of a ship at any rank, not a Captain in rank. I doubt he would've held the rank of Captain because of his weight and because he had 3 ships "shot out from under him".  That would be a career killer. One ship shot out from under you and you're a hero, two and they wonder why you didn't "go down with the ship" and probably never give you a third, three and you're a jinx and must be doing something wrong.  During the war there were a lot of 0-5 captains.  In all probability, an enlisted cook was probably correct.  Owning the boat tour business he would be Gilligan's skipper.  But on TV anything can happen.
