Question
Sir,

I have a question, I have served 4 of my five year contact in the Navy and currently have 2 PRT Failures.  Is it true that I will receive some sort of severance pay once discharged.  I have heard that I will receive about half of my base pay.  Thank you!

Answer
Hi K.R.,

I'm afraid I have bad news for you. Generally, involuntary separations for such matters as weight failure or PRT failure result in involuntary separation pay (commonly called "severance pay."

However, under Congressional law, to be entitled to involuntary separation pay, one must have six or more years of active duty service. In other words, with only four years of active duty service, if you are discharged for PRT failure, you are not entitled to any severance pay.

For details, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/pay/2007Pay/blsepenl.htm

Hope this helps!
