Question
Hey Howard, I recently enlisted in the AF, completed BMT @ Lackland and was sent to Sheppard for Tech Training. While at Tech Training (only a couple weeks) a virus was going around and I caught it. I was barely able to breath and went to the med's. They threw me an inhaler and told me I had asthma. I have been tested for asthma & allergies in the past and have neither. The told me immediately that they were starting the paperwork for a medical DC due to asthma symptoms. The AF is all I have ever dreamed of and went through BMT as a top airman physically. I was sent home and need to know what I need to do to get asthma off my DD214 so I can enlist in the Air National Guard, Coast Guard or I would really like to get back into the AF. Do I need to seek legal guidance & if so, should I go through my Recruiter to help? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Answer
Chris,

I am sorry to hear that yo uhave been discharged. the one thing that they Air Force will not tell you is that You have the right to contest the decision. You should  have went to the Base Legal office and pled your case. You can get the decision changed , but it is a long and difficult deal. You basically have to apply to have your military record changed and then re-enlist. But where they get you is that the Air Force will not take Prior service back to active duty right now. To change your record you will have to get your records from the National Records Archive, you can apply at www.archives.gov . It takes time so be patient.

I have spent the past 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, 3 years was assigned as an Enlisted Accessions Recruiter. I have been deployed various times to several locations. If it is a career in the military you are looking for or thinking about I most likely have the answer. I still have contacts with in the recruiting field and if I don't know the answer then I have folks who do where I can find the answer. I am very blunt and straight forward and will make no attempts to BS you. I will give you the best information that I possible can can. If you think that you cant handle the answer that I give you, then don't ask the question...... If you are planning on joining the military, your number 1 decision factor in making this kind of move is that you need to be more concerned about serving your country than your country serving you!! All the benefits are the best that you can find. Education is at a premium right now and its the most rewarding thing that you can do. If I dont answer right away probably means that I am busy, but have patience, I will get to you.
