Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Army to Navy transfer for Aviator

Question
Hi, my husband is a Warrant Officer helicopter pilot in the Army. He is soon deploying with his current unit, and when he returns he will have barely 2 years left in his contract. He would like to tranfer to the Navy for the remainder because the Army has not really turned out to be his cup of tea. Is this at all possible? He says that it is, but I haven't seen any evidence of that in my research. And if it is possible, will he have to sign up for additional time? He's not planning on going career. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Brittany

Answer
Hi Brittany,

I'm afraid it's not going to happen. The Army is currently undermanned, and the Navy is currently overmanned. The Army is increasing in size over the next several years, and the Navy is decreasing in size.

In fact, the Department of Defense has developed a special program (Called Blue to Green -- see http://usmilitary.about.com/od/armyjoin/a/artransfer.htm), which allows members of the Air Force and the Navy to separate early for the purposes of joining the Army, but not the other way around.

Hope this helps!
