Question
I was in the Navy for 10 years and got out as a E-5. 6 months later i joined the Army a dropped rank to an E-4. I read that i should be eligiable for promotion after 6 months but thats not the case. My S-1 shop states that my Navy prior service doesn't count and i have to wait till i have 2 years in the Army to get promoted. Is there any truth to this? Am i really stuck as a E-4 for another 1 1/2 years? I'm not asking for a promotion to be givin to me but i would atleast like a shot at it. If this is the way it's going to be i should have stayed where i was. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Answer
Hi Rich,

You may wish to read my article, "Knowledge is Power" at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/publicationsregulations/a/knowledge.htm

After reading this article, what are you going to do????

Are you going to trust what your S-1 shop tells you, or are you going to read through the Army Enlisted Promotion Regulation at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/armyreg/l/blar600819.htm to find out what the *real* promotion criteria is?

I'll leave the rest as an "instructional exercise for the student." Can you "decipher" what the Army enlisted promotion regulation says? If so, then you may be deserving of promotion to E-5. If not, then how in the heck would you expect to act as an NCO and advise your subordinates about promotion requirements?

In other words, I hope I've taught you how to fish, instead of giving you the fish to eat.

Hope this helps!
