Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Army Rangers and DUI

Question
I have a question about DUI's and how they affect joining the Rangers.  My recruiter told me that, because I had to attend a an alcohol class as part of my probation, this will disqualify me from getting a security clearance.  He said that they will consider it as being counseled for alcoholism; however, the class was not a counseling session, but was basically an informational class on the effects of alcohol.  Am I completely forclosed from joining the Rangers because of this class?  I read that getting security clearances are done on a case by case basis, and that there are other factors that may mitigate negative aspects of your record.  Is this true?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi TJ,

Your recruiter is probably correct, but he/she is not the final word. When you process through MEPS, as part of the processing, before your job determination, you'll meet with a "security counselor," who who will evaluate your history and determine whether or not you are qualified for an Army job which requires a Security Clearance.

It costs "big bucks" to process a security clearance and/or to change a person's job, if the person fails to get a secruity clearance required for the job. Therefore, upon initial enlistment, they're pretty strict, when it comes to the initial pre-screening for security, for new recruits.

In short, you're likely going to be disqualified from a guaranteed Ranger Contract. However, if you enlist in a field that is used by Rangers, such as Infantry, after a year, or two or proving yourself, your chances of being accepted into Rangers is probably pretty good (as long as you meet the other qualification criteria).

Hope this helps!
