Question
I am a recently married male with one step child and twins on the way.  I am eager to join the military.  I am not eligible for the airforce or the navy due to criminal and familial circumstances.  The army is my present and available option and I want to choose a job that is least likely to be deployed to irag.  I simply wish to be with my family if possible.  Do you have any advice?  I was told by my recruiter that chaplains assistant, paralegal and accountants are least likely to be deployed.  Is there any truth to this?

Answer
Derek:

REalistically, ALL jobs have the potential to be deployed to Iraq.  Expect this going in.  My advice is to go and get it over with, then you can take advantage of the benefits that are offerred.

In the end, you have to do what is right for you, and will allow you to look at yourself in the mirror.  Are you going to be able to look your kids in the eye 10-15 years from now and say you were "in", but didn't go?

Not everyone 'overthere' is a rifle toter with their *ss in the grass;  the logistical tail (beans, bullets, bandaids, admin, etc) is far longer than the gunfighters.

Again, if you enlist, enlist with the idea that it's just a matter of "when", not "if".

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
