Question
Colonel -

As part of a term paper I am doing for one of my courses, I am looking for the different types of units (platoon, company, etc.), and definitions for them.  So far, I am not having any luck.  Can you please be of assistance?

Thank-you in advance,
Marc Eichler

Answer
Dear Marc --

Part of the problem may be that once you leave the theory of unit structure behind, each unit is tailored to their mission.  In general, we have the squad as the smallest functional unit.   It is comprised of 9 soldiers (in the Army).

Next is the platoon, comprised of 3 or 4 squads plus a platoon sergeant and a platoon leader.

A company is comprised of three platoons plus a small headquarters staff which will have a company commander, a first sergeant, a supply sergeant, a clerk and an armorer.

A battalion is made up of three companies, plus a battalion staff.  The battalion is led by the battalion commander supported by his command sergeant major.  The battalion's staff will have at least 5 staff officers and a sergeant supporting each officer, but may have significantly more.

The brigade is made up of three battalions, plus the requisite staff.

The division is made up of three brigades, etc.

The Corps is made up of 2 or three divisions.

I hope this helps with your term paper.  Please ask a more specific question, if you need additional information.
