QuestionI am currently towards the end of my enlistment in the Navy.. I was wondering if it was possible for me to switch from the Navy to the Coast Guard, this isn't what I want for my two little girls at home.. I am gone all the time, i've be active duty for nearly 7 years and it is taking a toll on my family tremendously. If it is possible, what steps do I need to take.
Very Respectfully,
Fuquan
AnswerDear Fuquan --
It is possible to change from the Navy to the Coast Guard. However, the Coast Guard must need someone of your rank and capabilities, or they will not accept you.
I recommend you find a Coast Guard recruiting office and talk with them well before your current enlistment is complete. They can help you with the right paperwork so that you depart the Navy and immediately re-enlist in the Coast Guard, if they need someone with your specialty.
If you are willing to take a reduction in rank, and go back to some training, there are likely to be additional opportunities within the Coast Guard for you. I would keep your willingness in this area quiet, until you see whether it will be necessary to make such an offer to get a Coast Guard billet.
Thank your for serving. Good luck to you.
