Question
I have a question for you, I am a high school senior that makes good grades and scores well on the P.A.C.T. and other standardized tests. I have not taken the asvab yet but plan to a.s.a.p. I have been researching both the Coast Guard and the Marines but for different reasons. I want to be part of the prestige and history that the marines have to offer but also the maritime safety and homeland security of the Coast Guard. I plan on attending college and either doing a NROTC with the marine option or getting a degree in Criminal Justice and trying for the OCS in the Coast Guard. My question is are there any combat roles for the coastguardsmen. And also is there a rotc scholarship program for The Coast Guard?(i have not seen one or heard of one.)Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Jamison,

There are combat roles in the Coast Guard, but they are limited. See the article on my website at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/coastguard/a/uscgwar.htm

I'm afraid the Coast Guard doesn't have an ROTC program, scholarship, or not. As one of the smallest branches, the Coast Guard gets more than their fair share of officier applicants, through their OCS program, and doesn't need to run an ROTC program.

Hope this helps!
