Question
Hello,
I have a few questions reguarding jobs in the coast guard that I hope you don't mind answering.

My career plan in the future is to get itno law enforcement. I'm considering going to school her ein the fall for criminal justice. But I also believe the experience you can gain in the military would hold alot more water than a degree.

I was thinking about going active duty in the coast guard. Now I wanted to go port security, but it seems only people in the reserves can do that. Is that correct? Is anyone in port security active?
If I can't get into port security because it's only for the reserves, then I'm thinking about going with Gunner's mate. I'd imagine that the expertise you gain about weapons in the MOS would be a big boost in the eyes of law enforcement. Do you agree?

Any suggestions on an MOS that would give me some experience in law enforcement?

Thanks

Sean:

I'm not a Coastie and have never been one.  My suggestion is to talk to a USCG recruiter who can give you exact answers to those questions.  I will say that any sort of 'weapons' type training you get won't count for much when it comes to civilian law enforcement, since they make you go through a complete course on weapons they carry anyway.  Still, the experience doesn't hurt you at all.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
