Question
Hello, I am a Freshmen at Kent State, majoring in flight Technology, I would like to join the Coast Guard as a Pilot (fixed or rotary), what is the best route to do this, I read somthing about a requirment of previous military flight training, so do I have to join another branch first, like the navy, then join the Coast Guard later in life, or can the Coast Guard provide military flight training, also is there an ROTC type of thing for the Coast Guard.
Thanks ahead of time,
Sean Coyne

Answer
Hi Sean,

In most cases, the Coast Guard only accepts pilot applicants from those with military flight experience. In other words, you would have to first be a pilot in another branch.

However, the Coast Guard has a program called the Blue 21 Program for college graduates with no military flight experience. To qualify, however, you would have to meet certain minimum qualification standards. Details at: http://www.gocoastguard.com/dc/dcprograms/blue21.htm

Hope this helps!
