Question
Hi Rod,
I served in the Coast Guard for four years and seven months, I was an MK3 at two small boat stations, and was Honarably discharged back in 1999. I now am a full time FireFighter and I am thinking about going back into the Reserves. What I would like to know is... Will I have to go back to Basic Training, and if so, for how long? Is there an enlistment (or re-enlistment)bonus?

Thank You for your time.

Answer
Hi Michael,

Re-enlisting into a service as a "prior service" enlisted is not as easy as you may think.  The reason is that, when you come back in, you're competing against other members who are already in, and considering re-enlisting.  They get first priority.

In other words, the Coast Guard has a re-enlistment goal (a number) of people they want to re-enlist after 4 years of service.  Those already in, get a chance to re-enlist, first.  If there are any slots left over, they will consider "prior service" folks who made the choice to get out, and now want to come back in.

Now, for the Reserves, it's generally easier.  You will not have to attend basic training again.  You may have to attend a two-week "refamiliarzation course," or you may not.  That decision is made by higher headquarters, depending on several factors.

You need to visit a Coast Guard *Reserve* recruiter, who (after examining your particular military experience and record) can give you specific details.

Hope this helps!
