Question
is it possible to be promoted to Specialist during basic or AIT? thanks

Answer
Dear Jay --

It is possible to graduate from AIT and be promoted to specialist.  Your enlistment papers have to allow for this possibility, you have to graduate at the top of your basic and AIT classes, and you usually must have a master's degree in an under staffed specialty area.  Sometimes you can get this agreement, if you have only a bachelor's degree.  The specialties where this can occur are usually medical support and laboratory technician, it can happen in other understaffed specialties, with the agreement stipulated on your enlistment papers.

Hope this answers your question.
