Question
Hello, I am 30, married, and have two children. The requirements said that I could have no more than two children. I'm not sure if I read it right, either I cannot have more than two, or if I have more than two I'm not eligible. Let me know, it would be greatly appreciated. I want to go in the Navy, possibly in the Dental or medical field. Thank you

Answer
Hi Pernell,

This is covered by the Navy recruiting regulation COMNAVCRUITCOMINST 1130.8G – VOLUME I. Paragraph 020202 lists the basic requirements for enlistment. Subparagraph a.(5) states:

"(5) Have no more than one dependent (not counting the spouse). (waivers may be granted for financially responsible applicants with more dependents)."

However, no reason to panic. Such waivers are issued almost routinely. The Navy is going to look at your current family financial obligations (your bills) to determine whether or not you can support your family on Navy pay.

They can't use your spouse's income to determine this, because there is no guarantee that after you join the Navy, and your family relocates to whatever base you get stationed at, that your spouse will have a job, or have a job that paid the same as before.

So, in considering such waivers, the Navy will take your current bills, and then determine whether or not you can meet those financial obligations, and support your three dependents (spouse and two children), on your Navy pay.
