Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Enlistment age

Question
I am 56 yrs old with approximately 14 yrs prior service. I have been attempting to re-enter the usar. I took the physical and was scheduled to take the ASVAB; however, the testing was canceled. The recruiter explained he was told not to continue processing because the army would not grant an age waiver. The recruiter was under the assumption I could qualify for a waiver. Where do I stand?

Thank you

Terry

Answer
Hi Terry,

Age waivers are generally approved at the recruiting battalion level.

It sounds to me as if the recruiter began your enlistment process and sent your information up through his/her chain of command, and -- while processing your enlistment paperwork, then heard back from the chain of command that the recruiting battalion commander's officer would not approve an age waiver in your particular case.

I'm afraid that "where you stand," is at the point where the Army Reserves have decided not to accept you with your current age and time in service.

There is no "right" to join the U.S. Military (any branch). Each of the services have the absolute right to determine which candidates they choose to accept, and which they will not, based on individual factors, and the "needs of the service."

Hope this helps!
