Question
Hi, I have a 2-part question if you don't mind.  I am a junior in college and want to go into military aviation.  My vision is uncorrected 20/400, correctable to 20/20.  First...Does the Air Force grant waivers for their 20/200 uncorrected navigator requirement?  If not, I will apply to the navy's nav. program, because their req. is 20/400.  My second ? is:  Could I go into the Naval Reserve as a Fighter Nav?  Or do I have to serve as an active-duty Nav first?  Thanks so much for your help, and take care!

Answer
Hi Rob,

Aviation vision requirements for all the services can be found at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/dep.htm

In my experience, it is doubtful that the Air Force would waive a 20/400, when their standards are 20/200 for Navs.

You can apply for the Navy Reserves for any job. However, in the Reserves, it depends on available job slots which are vacant within the area around where you live (generally units located within 100 miles of your residence).

For active duty, they are dealing with slots world-wide.

Quite simply, there may not be any available Nav slots within 100 miles of where you live.

Hope this helps!
