Question
hello my name is jiquon and i am currently in a bind with me only having a ged. I am however enrolled in a local community college to earn 15 credits. My question is on what date does the year re-start for the military (as-in) on what date can the military make GED recipients tier 1

Answer
Hi Jiquon,

The Military doesn't ever make GED-holders Tier I.

GED-holders are *always* Tier II.

However, each of the Military services allow a certain percentage of Tier II (GED Holders) to join each year.

The Army (includes active duty, Army Reserves, and Army National Guard) allows as much as 30 percent of their recruits each year to be a Tier II, each fiscal year. However, under the regulation, in order for a Tier II to be eligible, they must score at least a 50 on the ASVAB. But, because there are a whole lot more Tier II applicants who want to join, than there are slots available, most of those accepted are those who score 80 or greater on the ASVAB.

The Navy and the Naval Reserves allow about 15 percent of their applicants each year to be Tier II. To be part of that 15 percent, one would need to score between an 85 and 90 on the ASVAB, to be competitive for one of the limited slots.

The Marine Corps (active and Reserve), the Air Force (active, reserve, and Air National Guard), and the Coast Guard (active and reserve), accept the fewest Tier II applicants each year (less than five percent). You pretty much have to ace the ASVAB in order to be considered as a Tier II candidate in any of these branches.

Recruiting runs on a "fiscal year," which means the "recruiting year" begins each October 1. However, that does not mean they accept more Tier II applicants at the beginning of the FY than they do at the end. Whoever told you that is mistaken.

My advice? Unless you are a "test-wiz" and can score very high on the ASVAB, get your 15 college credits.
