Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Husband with medical issues

Question
My husband is currently at Parris Island, S.C. as a potential Marine. There has been a problem, though. He is having a relapse of his asthma that he had a few years ago. They sent him to take a stress test, and he did very badly with that. So they sent him to a doctor about the asthma the next day. No word yet on what they plan to do. We have faxed his asthma records to Parris Island (the records state that he was indeed diagnosed with asthma, and needed to use an inhaler). We were told he had a good chance of getting disqualified now. This would not be a problem, my husband is very sick down there, and knows he cannot continue, but they seem to be taking their sweet time with it all, and it's very frustrating. My question is- if he's having asthma trouble now, and they see his history of asthma, will he be sent home?

Answer
Leigh:

Chances are, yes.  He will be medically dropped.  They will make sure that is, in fact, what is wrong, and will start the discharge process from there.  The military is required by law to do everything possible to treat any medical condition that may be caused by the military, therefore, they will do that before they release him.  However, asthma is a disqualifier.  He will no doubt be discharged, but be patient, it will take a little bit of time for that to wind it's way through the system.

Best regards,
Jason

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
