Question
My son is 18 and just graduated high school, he is going to join the Corp as soon as his medical exam is accepted.  He keeps telling us that the recruiter has told him he has a very good chance of getting 1 of 2 spots that are open in counter intel with his good marks on his tests (I don't know what they're called).  I just read your answer to Greg and of course, as a mother, I'm proud of my son, but I'm also scared out of my mind, that that's what they tell him but I'm sure they have a whole lot of other guys out there chewin at the bit just to have that chance, much less giving it to a young man that just graduated high school.  Oh and if he's in counter intel they also say he won't ship out overseas for at least 13 months
True?  Any or all of it?  Help?

Answer
Linda:

Counter-Intell is a "lateral move" only job.  Meaning he has to be in the Corps for some time before he can get it.  It's possible those rules have changed, but I don't think so.  They are very, very, selective in that job.  CI Marines deploy....A LOT.   Read that one again.  A LOT.   The 13 month thing sounds unrealistic to me.

If the recruiter is talking about "Intelligence" Marines (a different MOS) that is something he can enlist for right away.  They deploy (all Marines do) as well, but 13 months is probably about right with all the schooling you have to do.

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
