Question
My son joined at 17 came back 1yr ago and now going back on recall. Questions:
1) He will not be able to pay the high California mortgage on military pay, rents are half of mortgage payments. will he have to be foreclosed on or are there other options?
2)He attended college at night when he was in high school and MC has not allowed him to go to school.  He has been in school now and only 8 months away from a degree. Is there any way recall can be postponed for 8 months so that he can finally get an education?
3)Can he negotiate his duty assignment or will he be dodging bullets and granades for another 3 yrs?

Answer
Carmen:

I assume from your question your son is in the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) and has rec'vd a recall letter, or something along those lines.

As I understand this process, all IRR Marines who are recalled first have to be screened (similiar to MEPS) before they go back active.   Numerous things can happen during that screening to disqualfy him from being recalled.

The BAH (house payments) will possibly cover some of the mortgage, depending on where he lives, where he will be stationed, and what rank he is.   The Soldiers/Sailors relief act will apply here as far as foreclosure and interest rates.

No idea if a recall can be postponed so he can get a degree.  He'll have to request that in writing.  It will be up to Headquarters, Marine Corps to make that decision.

No, he can't 'negotiate' his duty assignment.  However, the recall period is usually 18 months to 2 years, (approximately) as IRR Marines, as I understand it, are treated similiar to the regular drilling reserve Marines, in other words, the activation period for them is less;  a local unit near me was activated for a grand total of 13 months for their deployment, and only 6 months of that was overseas.

Again, as I understand this process, he'll have to report and be screened prior to being re-activated.  He'll have a chance to present his case at that time.

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
