Hi Rod,
I have a question...ok, my boyfriend is in the Navy...we've been together for going on four years...we're looking at getting married within the next two years, but my question is, is that i've already decided that i'm going to move out to California to be with him...but can he live with me off base in like an apartment or do we have to be married or does he have to be an E-5 or some kind of officer before he is able to live off base? Also, if he is able to live off base, does he get any sort of housing allowance if we're not married? Thanks so much for your help!

Answer -
Hi Jessica,

He'll most likely be allowed to (unoffically) live off base, but he would receive a housing allowance. Generally, to be authorized to live off base at government expense, you must be in the rank of E-5 or above, or you must be living with your dependent(s) (married).

Hope this helps!

Answer
Hi Jessica,

Different bases have different policies. It depends primarily on the occupancy rate of the dormitories/barracks on the base for single personnel.

In general (without getting too specific about the rules), single (unmarried people) live in the barracks/dormitories on base (for free). If the dormitory/barracks occupancy rate, base-wide, exceeds 95 percent, the base will begin allowing single (unmarried) peope to move off-base at government expense. When they do this, they offer the chance to personnel based on their rank. In other words, higher-ranking enlisted personnel are given the opportunity to move out of the dormitories/barracks, before lower-ranking personnel are.

Again, while it can vary from one base to another, on average, as a single person, in order to be authorized to live off-base at government expense, one must be in the paygrade of E-5 or above (some bases offer it to E-4s with more than 4 years of active duty service).

Hope this helps!
