Question
Sir,
I am currently at 13 years of USAF active duty service with a clean record (both medical and service) up until now. I have somehow injured myself during an exercise (of which I am still not sure as to how or what and neither are the doctors) and now require the aide of a crutch to walk. As the doctors are trying to determine exactly what has happened and I gear up for another battery of tests and diagnostics (EMG) on my leg and body, the doctors have brought up a major issue I did not want to hear, M.E.B. and unfit for duty. If this happens what is the usual actions. I have been though the regulations and know that I might qualify for a retirement due to time in service (Regulation reads that after 12yrs 1mnth it is considered 30% disability), but how often does this happen and what should I prepare for as they get closer to calling me unfit. I sincerely wanted to finish out my time but it is starting to look bleak on those plans and I am now trying to adjust to what may be a permanent condition.

Best regards,
Greg

Answer
Hi Greg,

You'll want to read my article about the MEB/PEB process at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/medseparation.htm

There's no way I can estimate what the chances are that the MEB will decide you have a condition which is incompatible with Military service, as each and every case is evaluated individually. Hopefully, the article will answer most of your questions.

Hope this helps!
