Question
I had a relative that was the highest ranking officer that was killed in WW II.  His name was Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr.  What was his rank when he was killed?  I know his father of the same name was a General during the Civil War, but I am not interested in him.
Thank you for your assistance in this manner.

Answer
Dear Ken --

According to the rolls, Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr, died on Okinawa (1945 June 18).  He is carried on the rolls as a four star general (General).  I could not confirm whether he was a four star at death, or promoted post-humously to four star.

I hope this helps.
