Question
My name is ADAN Hagar. I have been stationed in Atsugi Japan for a little over a year now. I thought the navy was for me and realized that it is holding me back from what i want to do. What are my options for getting out of the navy early? I dont like it here nor do I like the navy, or this command. Being here in japan, and in the navy period has seemed to turn me for the worst. I am depressed all the time, and have the I dont care attitude with everything now. I know the navy is trying to downsize anyway. I read about the early out program but it was for 2005 if I am correct. I would appreciate if you could help me out.
Thank you

Answer
Hi Adan,

I'm not trying to sound "harsh" here, but the military is not like getting a job at Sears or your local McDonalds.  You can't simply quit, simply because you find you don't like it.  You signed a contract, and you took an oath, and you are obligated to both.  The Navy has spent a significant amount of time and money on  your training, and your transportation costs, and they want to get their money's worth.  It's pretty much that simple.

Okay, now that we got that out of the way, the Navy is overmanned, and they've decided to let some folks out early, both in FY 2005, and FY 2006.  But, not everyone.  YOu have to meet the FY 2006 criteria.  You can read the criteria at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/navy/a/06separation.htm

You're probably not going to be eligible under the FY2006 program, because -- to be eligible, you would have had to have first served the minimum DoD prescribed tour period for your overseas assignment.  If you are married, for Atsugi Japan, that's probably 36 months, and -- if single, it's probably 24 months.

There are some other options for getting out of the military early, but they are limited.  For details, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/getout.htm
