Question
4 months ago my husband had a batallion level NJP. They degraded him from a SGT to a Cpl.  He was supposed to be on a 4 month probation period, pending no more mistakes and all that... well his 4 months came & went and the CO that did the NJP is out in VA training. Techincally how long is the wait before you can pick back up SGT, after getting reduced to Cpl?? I've heard 6 months, 8 months and then a year, before being able to be promoted. Thanks for any help!

Answer
Cindy:

It's going to depend on how the NJP was written, truth be told.   If it said he would get his Sgt back after 4 months of good behavior, then it sounds like an administrative promotion that could be done through the S-1 shop.

After a reduction in grade, he has to wait the normal time (after the promotion) that anyone else would have to wait to be promoted from Corporal to Sergeant, as well as get the correct cutting score.

What he really needs to do is talk to his 1stSgt to find out exactly where he stands, since he'll also have to be reccommended for promotion, if that doesn't happen it doesn't matter what your scores are, you won't get promoted.

Best of luck,

Jason

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.

Experience

Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years. I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
