Question
QUESTION: My sons recruiter says he cannot find an available position as an MP for the FL National Guard in the unit that is nearest to our home(about 2 hours away). He says there are openings in another unit about 4 hours away. Will the Guard provide my son any compensation for gas, hotel, tolls, etc. if he accepts this position?

ANSWER: Hi Cindy,

I'm afraid not. The current law does not authorize the Reserves or National Guard to provide travel reimbursement for a member to travel from their residence to their place of duty. He would be authorized for billeting when at his place of weekend drill (either in the "barracks" on the base, or in "contract quarters" at an off-base hotel/motel.

QUESTION: What exactly does "authorized for billeting" mean?
And, thank you.

Answer
"Authorized for billeting" means he'll be given a free place to stay during his drill weekends.

Either that "free place to stay" will be in a Military barracks, or he will be put up in a hotel/motel off-base, if such on-base billeting is not available. In either case, it will be at government expense.

In either case, the choice is not his -- it's up to his drill unit of assignment. If his drill unit has available space in the barracks, he'll stay there. If not, the base will put him up in a hotel/motel off base, and they will pay for it.
