Question
Hi rod, I am currently a Navy DEP right now shipping out in 2 months. I may be getting a bit ahead of myself here but I was wondering how the whole assignment and dream sheet thing works. If I am correct you fill it out shortly before leaving your "A" school,Pensacola in my case, and may or may not get your location preference depending on the Navy's needs. I am in the AC rating and I was wondering if you knew how hard or otherwise it is to be stationed overseas say at any NAS in Japan, Italy, Spain or anywhere abroad. I'm wondering if most sailors request to be located in the U.S. or abroad. And does a lot of it just depend how high in your class you are at "A" school? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Mike,

You'll want to see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/recruiter10.htm

It discusses first duty station assignments.

The simple fact of the matter is there is no way to tell or even estimate for sure where your first assignment will be. It depends on where the Navy needs brand-new ACs at that particular point in time. The "needs of the Navy" can (and does) change from one month to the next.

Your first assignment may not be overseas. But, I can pretty much guarantee, if you stay in the Navy, you'll get more than your share of overseas assignments.

Hope this helps!
