Question
i was wondering if you can help me with this, there is a lack of info on the subject. I know im getting a little ahead of my self here, I haven't even joined the military yet, but how does one get into DEVGRU? I know they focus on counter terror more so than the rest of the seal teams. But im in the process of joining the navy with a seal contract. Id just like to know how I can increase my chances of getting into the team. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mike,

I doubt there's anyone who can really give you any concrete answers about this. The "Naval Special Warfare Development Group" (NAVSPECWARDEVGRU, or simply DEVGRU), is a highly classified operation, on the par with Delta Force.

What is generally known among the public is that DEVGRU is the decendent of SEAL Team Six, which was formed in 1980, as a counter-terrorism team, following the the aftermath of the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages at the Iranian Embassy (Operation Eagle Claw). In 1987, SEAL Team six was disbanded and renamed NAVSPECWARDEVGRU.

That's about all that is publicly known. Nobody is going to be able to reliably tell you anything more, as their program is very highly classified. Most certainly, I can't (DOD loves me, but they often fail to let me in on their secret programs -- go figure!)

I suspect (but, again, cannot confirm) that their selection process is run much like DELTA. In other words, they hand-select the best among the best of the Navy SEAL Teams, when a slot becomes available. Want to make the DEVGRU program (as an Operator), then you (1) make your SEAL Team commander aware of your goals, and (2) make sure you're the "best of the best" on your Team.

I'm betting (but, again, I don't *know*, as it is highly classified) that to be considered, you'll have to be a SEAL with between six and 12 years of SEAL duty, and have impressed your commander so much, that he gets a "hard on," just thinking about you. Again, that's only a guess....
