Question
My grandfather served in the navy from January 1944 to October 1945 as an F2. Can you tell me what this rank means and what his responsibilities may have been?

Did you get that rank off of his discharge, or old paperwork, or by word of mouth? The reason I ask is that the only thing that corresponds to is a Fireman Apprentice (E-2). And, that doesn't seem to be right.
A Fireman Apprentice basically works in the engine room of the ship, helping with coal and boilers. (Coal fired ships were the rule in those days).
If you tell me what ship he served on, and perhaps a better rate/rank, I can give you more info. If he has any old uniforms or pictures lying around, look on the sleeve of the uniform, there should be something there. Then try and describe what you see.

Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years.
I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
