Question
Hello,

Here is my current situation and I was hoping to find out chances of attaining SECRET clearance for the job(s) I want in the Navy Reserve (AW rating).

1. Two college bachelor degrees (both non-technical)
2. A near perfect ASVAB score
3. Just completed probation for a DWI conviction(I was also required to take an alcohol education class as part of probation - no further sanctions
4. Charged with other a previous DWI, but found only guilty of a misdemeanor traffic violation charge with no DWI conviction - no further sanctions

My recruiter says I will have no problem getting a waiver to enlist, but I am afraid that this will not allow me to get SECRET clearance for the job(s) I want. Any insight would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi David,

See my article about Security Clearances at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security.htm

Nobody can say with 100 percent certainty what factor will or will not result in denial of a security clearance.

With that being said, keep in mind the purpose of the Security Clearance background investigation is to make a "best guess" on whether or not one can be trusted with safeguarding our Nation's Secrets.

It's *VERY* important that you be entirely honest when completing the security clearance application, and in any interviews that may be requested. Individuals who "shade the truth," or "lie" about previous history (thereby committing a "felony") in order to try and look better on the application (in other words, willing to lie for their own personal gain) are individuals that the Military can't trust with SECRETS.
