Question
Hi- Im trying to read my grandfathers SSofS NAVPERS-566 and I dont understand a lot of the abbreviations. Is there a website I can go to to look them up? for example: S1 rank, job code 76300, GCT mark 36, enlisted rating AS, limited duty symbol qual.  I also wanted to know if there was a way that I could find out if he was awarded any medals. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Gerri,

I'm afraid I don't know of any websites which show those abbreviations, most especially the abbreviations used 70 (or so) years ago, when your grandfather was serving.

I can tell you that "rating" means "job," in the Navy, and if he had a rating of "AS," that means he was An Aviation Support Equipment Technician (see the job description at: http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/navyjobs/navyjobs2/blas.htm). However, that would not be the same job description as in your Grandfather's time, as different aircraft were used back then.

You can find out what medals he earned by requesting a copy of his military records. Details about how to do so can be read in my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/milrecords.htm

Hope this helps!
