Question
Hello Mr. Powers,

I have recently completed an MBA program and have become interested in opportunities that the navy supply corps would grant.  Through some of my research, I have been told that if selected for the program, I would have the choice of submarine, surface warfare, or aviation supply.

I have pretty much ruled out submarine, leaving me with surface and aviation to ponder.  I was wondering if you would be able to give me a better idea of what each branch entails.  For example, would one of the two branches be more likely to have more shore duty, be on a certain type of ship, or perform different duties.

As a side question, I was wondering which type of career fields in the Navy are more likely to be on shore duty as opposed to being deployed for sea duty.  Based on my educational background, I'm pretty certain that the Supply Corps. is the way to go for me.....but I was just curious if any other fields stay on the ground more often.

Thank you for this great service that you provide to us all!

Answer
Hi Blake,

In either branch, you would likely perform the same ratio of sea duty/shore duty.

In both branches, you'll most likely spend your first 48 months of service assigned to a ship. After that, you'll spend 36 months assigned to shore duty, then 48 months assigned again to a ship.

If you are assigned to surface warfare as a supply officer, you can be assigned to pretty much any type of Navay ship (cruiser, destroyer, intel, fueling ship, etc.). If ass igned to aviation supply, your sea duty will pretty much be aboard an aircraft carrier.

I should mention here that you seem to be concerned with assignments which will keep you one shore.....If so, then joining the Navy is probably not your best choice -- the Navy is all about going to Sea. That's why the service exists. If that's not for you, then choose a different service.

Hope this helps!
