Question
Hi, I am experiencing a problem with my ability to stay at my current command for the remainder of my Navy enlistment. I am scheduled for a PCS in july 2007 and I would like to extend at my current sea duty command until 6Jan2009. I submitted a request to extend for 18 months but it was refused. Do you know of any loopholes or any other way I could disqualify myself from being able to PCS such as PRT failures that would allow me to maintain an honorable discharge and my MGIB? Or better yet a way to do it without cheating the system.

Answer
Hi Greg,

I'm afraid not. In every case that I know of, making yourself ineligible for re-assignment also makes yourself ineligible for re-enlistment, which -- in turn -- makes you ineligible for an honorable discharge.

I don't want to sound "harsh" here, but the military is not like a civilian job. It's not like working at McDonalds. Part of the job is going where you're told, when you're told, for how long you're told. That's the nature of the job.

When you enlisted, you signed up for 4, or 5, or 6 years, and as part of that enlistment, you agree to go anywhere that the Navy determined you were needed. I assume you understood this when you initially enlisted?
