Question
I am really interested in Navy ROTC, but I have a medical condition in my left
eye called a partial-thickness macular hole.  I have asked a couple of
recruiters if the condition is disqualifying and they all just tell me that they
could not determine that until I have a physical.  The condition is not that
rare and I would guess that there is probably some kind of regulation for it.
Could you tell me either what the regulation number is or who would be
someone who would know?

Answer
Hi Jake,

The standards for enlistment, induction, or commission (including ROTC) can be read on my site at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/intmedstandards.htm

I don't see your particular condition listed as a disqualifying factor (but, perhaps I missed it, so you may wish to check it yourself), but there is also the old "catch all" in the regulation (see: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/misc.htm), which lists as a disqualification factor, "Any condition that in the opinion of the examining medical officer will significantly interfere with the successful performance of military duty or training (796) may be a cause for rejection for appointment, enlistment, and induction."

Note that it's not *your* opinion, nor *my* opinion that counts, but rather the opinion of the MEPS Medical Doctor.
