Question
QUESTION: I got out in 98 with a Medical condition with my knees. My MOS was 0311. I was
only in for a little over a year. As far as the PFT not a problem. Still lean and
strong, but I'm 31 now. My question is, what are my chances of getting back in
and waving all my benefits that I get now, and if so can I get my 0311 back or
will they put me some where else. I also have 3 kids, will they take me because
they now have to cover them as well? Thanks

ANSWER: Jason:

If you were discharged under a medical discharge, you are correct, not only will you have to waive all benefits you get now, you could very well be required to pay back all you have rec'vd before they will even consider you.  It CAN be done, but it's a lengthy process.   Doubtful (but not impossible) the Marines will take you back, but one of the other services might;  check with the Army or the National Guard.    Either way, however, it's going to be an extremely time consuming and paperwork intensive issue, in addition, you'll need to have a doctor sign off on the fact your now completely physically fit.

QUESTION: Since I was discharged, I have seen Doctors to try to repair my knees. I
recently went for injections in both of my knees to reduce the grinding
between the joints. This wasn't available not even a few years ago. Why I
bring this up almost 10 years later, is that since these injections (Euflexxa) it
has stopped the grinding. I don't know how long they will last since its not a
permanent fix. In your opinion would I still have to pay the benefits back
since recent advancements in medicine. On my DD-214 and DD-215 it does
not indicate a Med Discharge don't know why but its not the only thing thats
missing on there. What about the Navy then? Then do a lateral move back into
the Corps. I'd rather be a Squid (temp) then being in the Army or National
Guard. I know they will pretty much take anyone. I greatly appreciate your
insite on this. Semper FI.

Answer
Daniel:

Yes, repayment of the benefits will likely have to occur.  It would be up to the VA as well as the individual service.  If you are listed as more than 30 percent disabled, it's likely they won't waiver it, period.  The DD214/215 section that should concern you is the Re-enlistment code, that is what's going to be an issue, esp if you are drawing benefits.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
