Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Re-enlisting With Prior NJP's

Question
Jason,
I'm currently a LCpl. with just over 3.5 years of service. I have two prior NJP's, one Company, one Battalion level. The latter resulted in a reduction in grade, to PFC. I was just re-promoted September 1, to LCpl. again. I am wanting to reenlist into EOD, a little over a year ago my Plt. Sgt. told me that the Corps had started accepting Lance's. Now I'm seeing a new MARADMIN (628/07) that only lists Cpl.-Sgt. as eligible? Also, my half-helpful Career Planner is saying that I can only reenlist into a two-year probationary period, sans bonus. Is there anything I can do about this? I've been talking to a Navy Recruiter who says they can bring me in for the full four year term, with the bonus. Their program is a little better, ie training9jump/dive schools, etc), equipment, and all that, but I really would like to stay in the Corps. What are my options? Thank you very much for your time.

Answer
Brian:

Sounds like you've done much of the research already.  However, my suggestion is to find your local EOD guys, and talk directly to them.  Make your case and go from there.  If they put in a good word for you at the SNCO level with the monitor, you could get a waiver.  That's the route I'd go.   It's sort of going over the career planner's head, but it is sometimes the best way to go.

I've never heard of a 2 year enlistment/reenlistment 'on probation' before.   Not saying it doesn't exist but it's the first time I've heard of that.

The other thing is, the NJP's may keep you from going into EOD, that might be an issue.

If the navy is actually offering the MOS, and it's in writing, that may end up being your only option.  Sucks sometimes, but that's the way it works out.

Expertise

Questions relating to US Marine Corps; rank, awards, uniforms, career choices. I can also help people spot and expose fakes (people pretending to be Marines or have awards they didn`t earn). Considering the Marines as a career? Or another branch, like the Air National Guard? Drop me a line. HOWever..know that I am NOT a recruiter. I can offer my expert opinion and advice, but can't (and won't) over rule what a recruiter says, they are the 'on duty' expert.
