Question
Hi,
My name is Patrick and I wanted to know a couple things. I got out the United States Marine Corps back in Aug of 06'. Since, I have joined the National Guard in pursuit of a college education. Unfortunately, things haven't gotten easier around here and have decided that I would like to Re-enlist back into active duty Marines Corps. Can this be done ? Even though I pertain to the National Guard ? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Patrick

Answer
Hi Patrick,

It's possible, but it most certainly is not going to be easy, especially as you wish to join an active duty branch which is not associated with the National Guard.

You'll have to submit a "conditional release" form, which must be approved by your unit, and the National Guard HQ. A "conditional release" form basically says that the National Guard agrees to release you, if you are accepted for active duty enlistment. There aren't any guarantees. The National Guard probably won't release you, if they feel your job is undermanned in the NG. Chances would be better if you applied for active duty for the same branch your NG is associated with (Army National Guard = active duty Army, Air National Guard = Active Duty Air Force).

For details, see my article about Guard/Reserve to active duty on my site at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/guardandreserve/a/reservetransfer.htm

Hope this helps!
