Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/Re-joining the military

Question
Hi Rod,

I have a double question for ya.  I am prior Navy and my husband is a prior Marine.  I got out in 1996 due to pregnancy and marriage with a renlistment code of RE-3B, I am now 29.
My husband ended up being discharged in 2000 for Asthma with a code of RE-3C. He is now 34.
Can you please tell me if it is possible (and what are the chances)of either of us rejoining the military? I was an Airforce brat growing up and we really feel the military is the best life for us as a family. Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hi Brenda,

If your spouse was discharged for Asthma, the chances of him being allowed to re-enlist are pretty slim (what has changed between 2000 and now that would lead the military to believe that his Asthma would no longer be a problem?)
In general, any history of Asthma attacks after the age of 13 is disqualifying, and not usually waived (for details, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/asthma.htm).

On the other hand, if you got out of the active duty military due to pregnancy, you could qualify for a waiver. At a minimum, you would have to convince the service that you are trying to join that you would not likely request a discharge in the future, if you got pregnant again.

Hope this helps!
