QuestionHi, my name is michael and i'm currently a 2nd LT, military intelligence, in the reserves. I was wondering if i could request component switch from reserve to active duty. How feasible is this? I keep hearing different answers from many people. Also, if is it possible, how hard is the process?
Thanks
AnswerDear Michael --
You can do one of two things if you wish to serve full time. The first and likely the easiest, is to volunteer for an active tour while remaining a reserve officer. Check the Army Knowledge Online site for MI billets that need filling and then volunteer to serve two to three years active to fill that billet.
While you are on your active tour, you can apply to switch to active duty. The MI branch will need to have a billet you can fill, and your reserve unit will need to release you. Since you will already be serving full time, your unit will likely release you.
Otherwise, you can apply to move into active status within the MI branch, or via a branch transfer to another branch. Talk to the active duty MI lieutenant branch manager in Alexandria, VA, and see if they have billets they still need filled. Then ask them how to apply for an active billet. They should be happy to work with you.
If you wish to change branches, check the shortage branches and then talk to that active duty branch manager. Again, they should assist you in what you need to do to apply for branch transfer and entry onto the active duty rolls.
Let me know if you are not getting the assistance you need.
Good luck to you.
