Question
Can a Navy enlisted man remain on active duty if he has donated a kidney to a sibling? Can He re-enlist? Can he reenter the Navy if he gets out? Is there a navy medical waiver instruction covering organ loss?

Answer
Hi Al,

Having only one kidney is a disqualifying factor for someone wishing to join the U.S. Military. For details, see my Military Medical Entrance Standards at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/intmedstandards.htm most especially the section on urinary conditions at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/urinary.htm

However, medical standards to join the Military, and standards to remain in the Military are two different things.

When it comes to remaining in the Military, it depends primarily if the person's medical condition interferes with the proper performance of their Military duties. For details, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/medseparation.htm

If the person gets out, and then wants to re-enter the Military, then we're back to the original medical standards for enlistment. However, a medical waiver, could be possible (no promises, but possible). For details, see my article at: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/medicalwaiver.htm

Hope this helps!
