Question
I have attempted to enlist in the Marine Corps, however I was denied because when I was 18 I was convicted of Possession with intent to distribute marijuana.  I have not had another arrests and I am 23 now.  I scored a 76 on the pre asvab test and do meet the physical fitness requirements.  If I get letters of good character from Marine friends and other good people do I still have a chance to join?  Is there someone in Recruiting Command I could write a letter to and try?

Answer
Dear Chin --

A conviction of felony possession with intent to distribute is a disqualifying act as far as military service goes.  Many such acts are waiverable, if you can show you are no longer the same type of person who committed the crime.

You must be an otherwise highly desirable candidate.  I recommend you find a recruiter that will work with you to develop a waiver for your conviction.  You may also have more success enlisting on a waiver with the Army rather than the Marines.

Good luck to you.
