Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/asthma and active duty

QuestionCol. Bedell, im currently an air traffic controller at shaw afb, and i was just (this morning, matter of factly) diagnosed with seasonal allergy induced asthma. Because of this i was taken off of flight status, and not permitted to perform my job duties (not because of the asthma, but to observe my reactions to the albuterol). The Flight Surgeon's Office has already informed me that tests will need to be performed in order to conclude 100% that it is in fact asthma, and then i would be up against a MEB to determine the outcome/future of my career.
My question: Does being in a critically manned career field affect the outcome and decision made by the medical examination board?
Im sure these will be taken into consideration. Im an e-4, with 3yrs left in my enlistment, and a first term airman.
AnswerDear Devin --
The medical evaluation board will determine if it is safe for you to do your job given your condition and/or the medication needed to treat your condition.
They could find you fit to remain in your current role. They could find that you cannot be an air traffic controller, but could determine that other occupational specialties are safe for you to do. They could determine you are medically unfit for duty and medically discharge you.
Unfortunately, as an air traffic controller, or anyone in the flight business, you have less leeway on what medical conditions and what medicines are allowed for your use. The fact that you are under a critical manning shortage will not affect the board outcome, if they determine it is dangerous for you to man an ATC terminal due to your condition. If you want to remain on duty, and your asthma is infrequent and treatable, you could change occupational specialties rather than accepting a discharge.
Since I am uncertain how long you have served and what the total length or service your first enlistment contract required, I cannot comment on whether you can retain any enlistment bonuses you received, or will be eligible for the GI Bill, or other benefits.
Write me back, if you want to elaborate your circumstances, and I will discuss them with you.
Good luck to you.
