Question
Who do soldiers assigned long-term to guarding a civilian
facility (like, a lab where sensitive work is done) report to
day-to-day?  Do officers at some level normally report to a
civilian administrator, or is there a normal military chain of
command all the way up?

Also, do different branches of the military do this kind of
work more than others, depending on the type of facility?

  First, apologies in taking so long to answer your question...been working overtime due to the snow.

  Basically, it depends on the type of facility and who is running it.  At Fort Detrick, where I was a civilian DOD police officer, we reported to a civilian Provost Marshal, who reported to the military chain of command.  The soldiers had their own chain of command, even tho they nominally worked for the provost marshal.

  All the services, except the Marines, do this type of thing.   

  So, I guess the answer is that the military runs the show on a military base.

Field Radio Operator: MOS 2531. Served as a Platoon Sergeant in a Communications Platoon assigned to MEU Service Support Group 24 (Special Operations Capable). Did a hitch in the Army reserves as an 11B (Infantryman), 3 years. Finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a BioEnvironmental Engineer MOS 4B3X1, did that for a few years. I"ve been collecting and selling Marine Corps and other military uniforms, medals, and field gear since I was 8 years old.
