Question
Hi my name is Cody. I'm a student at Cass City Middle Schools in Michigan. I would like to work for the Air Force. Would you please answer the following questions? My question for you is, what classes do you have to take? Also what classes do you have to special in? Thank you.

Answer
Greetings Cody -

The amount of schooling you would need depends on the direction you want to take.  Getting a commission as an officer requires a four-year bachelor's degree from a university.  There is no requirement for any particular type of degree, unless there is a specific field you want to get into, such as space technology (satellites, etc.), aerospace engineering or the nuclear fields.

If you want to enlist, you need nothing more than your high school diploma.  You would take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), a test which categorizes your knowledge of general items, administrative, mechanical, electronic, etc., to best determine which jobs would best suit you.  You can take the tests in your senior year of high school.

I hope this answers your question.  If not, don't hestiate to write back.

Sincerely,
James Bell

Expertise

I am a retired MSgt (2004) with 24 years experience in the aircrew career field, both as a loadmaster (AFSC 1A2x1) and flight engineer (AFSC 1A1x1). I have been to every continent at one time or another, and regularly flew 300 to 500 hours a year. I have been involved in the operations in Grenada, Panama, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. I can answer most questions you may have about enlisted Air Force life in general, assignments, benefits, and enlisted aircrew operations. NOTE: If you have specific recruiting and/or medical questions about how to get into this career field as a civilian, they have changed since my time, so that is best answered by a recruiter or MEPS. I can answer questions about military personnel wanting to RETRAIN. If you are asking about being an Air Force pilot, please be advised my area of expertise is ENLISTED aircrew operations, NOT OFFICERS.
