Question
Hello I Wanted to ask you a question i been wanting to know if I get accepted to the coast guard and I'm in the the program and the subject I want to learn about is computer technology do I have to of had a college degree to do that in the coast guard? Thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Mike,

The Coast Guard only has 23 enlisted jobs. For complete descrptions of those jobs, see: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/cgjoin/l/blcgjobs.htm

While some of their jobs may deal with computers, the Coast Guard does not have any enlisted jobs that deal directly with computer technology.

Additionally, in the vast majority of cases, the Coast Guard does not allow you to enlist with a guarantee of a specific job. Instead, for most Coast Guard enlistments, you enlist and spend a year (or so), as a "general seaman," performing general duties ("swab that deck! Paint that rail! Man that bow-line -- look sharp, now!"), before you are allowed to strike (apply) for a specific job).

For details, see my article, "What the Recruiter Never Told You," (http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/recruiter.htm), most especially, Part 3 of the article, which covers job-selection processes of each of the branches.
