Careers: Military--Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, Coast Guard/social anxiety disorder and army service

Question
Well I am over 2 years into the army and there's no fooling myself any longer -- I have social anxiety disorder, to the point it can probably be classified as the more serious avoidant personality disorder.
My question is whether I will be separated from military service if I seek treatment from a military doctor.  I would very much like to complete my enlistment obligation, so would my only option be to have this treated after about 2-3 more years?  It's not like I'm a risk to other soldiers in any way -- I do quite well at my job, and I'm able to internalize everything to the point I just look like I'm reserved rather than have a disorder.

Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi soldier,

Hmmm....What year did you graduate medcical school, and/or what year did you receive your degree in psychology or psychiatry?

Unless you have a medical degree (four years of college, plus three years of medical school, plus three years of residency), or a Master's or above degree in psychology, plus two years of residency, you're not qualified to diagnose an anxiety disorder, either in yourself, nor in others.

*Assuming* your ameture diagnosis is correct, it doesn't necessarily mean a discharge, most especially if the condition is not interfering with the performance of your military duties.  For details, see my article at:  http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/medseparation.htm.

However, in the meantime, until you receive the proper education and experience, quit trying to diagnose yourself, and get professional help.

Hope this helps!
